Local Member of Parliament Bim Afolami has welcomed the news that Ministers at the Department for Transport have told rail operators to keep ticket offices open.
It comes after Mr Afolami had launched a campaign in his Hitchin & Harpenden constituency against the plans – which would have included the closure of ticket offices at Hitchin Station and Harpenden Station. The Member of Parliament cited correspondence with hundreds of constituents concerned about the potential impact that closures could have on vulnerable people, as well as the increased difficulty it would bring to planning and booking complex journeys.
Speaking after the decision was announced, Bim Afolami MP said,
“It is fantastic news that the Government has stepped in to keep ticket offices open. I know from my conversations with hundreds of local people – many of whom backed my campaign to protect ticket offices – the positive impact that this will have for local people.
“I have heard so many stories of vulnerable or disabled people to whom ticket offices have been a real lifeline. And even more of helpful ticket office staff proving their value at times of distress or need. I am delighted that we have been able to save this service that people in our constituency really rely on.”
