This week, all eyes have been on the horrifying events in Israel. The scenes of violence which have been broadcasted on television and across the internet have brought to the fore the realities of terrorist violence - communities torn apart, lives and livelihoods destroyed, untold human suffering.
Our thoughts are, first and foremost, with the victims and their families at this incredibly difficult time. While the Middle East might, at times, seem to be a far-off place, many people in the UK have friends and relatives in the region, and will be worrying for their safety. If you are one of those people, please know that my thoughts are with you.
I want to make clear my support for statements made this week by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary. Britain is a country that stands proudly with its allies against terrorism. I support the Prime Minister's decision to strengthen the UK's military presence in the region, in order to promote stability in the region, and to provide aid in humanitarian efforts taking place on the ground. I also support his condemnation of Hamas' despicable actions, in no uncertain terms. Hamas is not only a threat to Israel, but to the Palestinian people.
I also want to make clear that nobody in this country should ever be made to feel intimidated on the basis of their religious or national background. The hateful rhetoric emanating from some quarters, including apologia for Hamas' disgusting actions, is totally unacceptable, particularly when it manifests itself as threats and intimidation. I am proud of the Prime Minister's unequivocal approach to this issue, and of the support that he has given the British Jewish community at this extremely challenging time.
There is little to add which has not already been said. Our hope is for peace and stability in the region, an end to terrorist violence, and an end to opportunistic efforts to stir up tensions in this country. I know that these are hopes shared right across our community, and I will continue to make this case on your behalf as your Member of Parliament.
