In this month’s column, I wanted to update you on the work I have been doing to secure the future of High Street banking in Harpenden, following Barclays’ announcement that they will be closing the last bank branch in town in September.
I have for some time been campaigning for a full service Banking Hub in Harpenden which would allow multiple banks to share the same space and protect in-person banking services on our High Street.
Throughout that campaign, you have told me about the significant role that having local banks on the High Street plays in making our town a great place to live, work and set up a business, so I know how important it is that we get this right.
I first found out about Barclays’ plan to close their Harpenden branch on the afternoon of Thursday 1st June. I immediately wrote to their Chief Executive to seek clarification over their plans for local customers and ask if they would be willing to work with me to join a shared banking hub. They have confirmed that they will continue to provide some services through a “Barclays Local” in Harpenden and have agreed to meet with me to discuss Harpenden’s banking needs further.
I have also spoken with LINK, who work with the banks to ensure that local residents have access to banking services. They have recommended a shared deposit service to be installed in Harpenden following the closure of Barclays. This is better than nothing, but does not go far enough to meet the needs of Harpenden residents and I will continue to push for a full banking hub.
With that in mind, I wrote to the Chancellor to make the case for urgent action to protect the future of in-person banking services in Harpenden. I am also in touch with the Financial Conduct Authority who will shortly be receiving increased powers to enforce shared banking services through the Financial Services and Markets Bill. I have asked them to take urgent action to ensure that Harpenden residents maintain access to a full service bank branch once Barclays closes.
Please be assured that I will continue to do all I can to pursue this on behalf of Harpenden residents.
