Hitchin’s Member of Parliament Bim Afolami MP visited Hitchin Girls’ School on Friday 17th March to speak to Sixth Formers and politics students.
Mr Afolami spoke to around 250 Sixth Formers about how they can get involved with politics as young people and to share some insight into routes into politics. He then joined a politics lesson, where a group of around 20 students questioned him on his views on the big topics of the day, before speaking to the school’s Headteacher about the challenges and opportunities facing the school.
Bim Afolami MP said,
“Engaging with young people about politics is always a great experience. It was a real pleasure to speak to Sixth Formers and politics students at Hitchin Girls’ School about how young people can get into politics and to answer some of their very thoughtful questions on really important issues around the cost of living, education, anti-social behaviour and more. I look forward to seeing some of them in the House of Commons in future!
“I also had a productive meeting with Mr Crowther, the school’s Headteacher, about the challenges facing schools currently and how I can support the school with these issues.”
Students from Hitchin Girls’ School said,
“We appreciated the opportunity to meet Bim Afolami and find out a bit about his role as MP of Hitchin and Harpenden. It was also helpful to be given the opportunity to ask him a range of questions on topics that we are passionate about, like issues for young people are facing, the environment and immigration. It gave us a different perspective on the issues that the government have to deal with.”
