Hitchin & Harpenden Member of Parliament Bim Afolami MP has written to the Leader of Hertfordshire County Council about a new Government fund for walking and cycling.
The Government has pledged new funding of £200m to help councils like Hertfordshire deliver projects to make it easier to walk and cycle. In his letter to Cllr. Richard Roberts, Mr Afolami asks the Leader to work with him to ensure that residents in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages are able to get their fair share of this new funding.
It comes as the MP has made improving rural connectivity one of his key priorities, with rural walking and cycling upgrades having the potential to boost our area and make it easier for local people to get around. Mr Afolami and the local Conservatives have also been campaigning to improve walking and cycling access to the train stations in both Hitchin and Harpenden, and this could form a part of a future bid for funding.
Bim Afolami MP said,
“Making it easier for people to walk and cycle in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages is really important for residents. I am really pleased to see this new pot of £200m funding opened by the Government to help local Councils deliver on projects like these. It is vitally important that we look at whether we can take advantage of this funding pot to deliver for local residents.
“I look forward to working with Cllr. Roberts and the County Council to assess projects in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages and look to secure appropriate funding to deliver them.”
