Harpenden’s Member of Parliament Bim Afolami MP visited Roundwood School to speak to Sixth Formers about current political events and take their questions. More than 100 Year 12 students quizzed the Member of Parliament for his thoughts on politics, mental health and this year’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, which featured fellow Parliamentarian Matt Hancock MP.
Bim Afolami MP said,
“Speaking to local young people about politics is a great joy – they often ask insightful and hard-hitting questions and it was a pleasure to take part in this robust session with challenging questions from Roundwood’s Year 12 students! Engaging people with politics at school and university is so important because politics helps to shape our understanding of the decisions that impact our every day lives.
“As the local Member of Parliament, I will continue to visit local schools and speak to young people about politics, answering their questions about why things are as they are, what really happens behind the scenes and how decisions are reached. Sessions like these are also vitally important for me to understand what young people want to see from politicians in Westminster and how we can better deliver on their priorities.”
Jack Fearn, Year 12 student at Roundwood School, said,
“It was great to have the opportunity to question a politician first-hand. Whilst we didn’t all agree on his ideas, Bim gave alternative insights into current issues of today and made us all reflect on our own opinions.”
