In my time as the Member of Parliament for the wonderful constituency of Hitchin & Harpenden I have met so many local people who do fantastic things in and for our local community. This was particularly true during the Covid pandemic, when thousands of people across Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages came together to help those most in need locally.
During Volunteers Week earlier this month, I heard about even more of the fantastic work that is being done by volunteers in every corner of our constituency. A lot of this work is often unsung, which is why I am launching a new project this Autumn which seeks to shine a light on some of the people going above and beyond to help local people and recognise the good work that they have been doing.
The Hitchin & Harpenden Community Champions campaign will recognise one volunteer each month for the good work that they do supporting our community. Our volunteers are inspirational and I hope that by giving them a platform to talk about their activity, we will inspire even more people to make a difference in our community; as well as ensuring that those who do get the recognition that they deserve.
As part of this project, I am asking local residents, Councillors and community organisations to nominate volunteers going the extra mile in their communities to be considered to be Hitchin & Harpenden's monthly "Community Champion". To nominate someone, please visit www.bimafolami.co.uk/champions and fill in the webform.
