I spent a wonderful evening in the beautiful village of Hexton with Amelia Cooper, who, having only just left university, helped found Help Refugees. The charity was established in 2015 in response to the developing refugee crisis in Europe, with the aim of raising money to send a van full of donations to Calais. Since then, Help Refugees has helped over 700,000 people and supported 80 projects across Europe and the Middle East.
I have never seen the extremely difficult and sensitive issue of refugees handled with such intellect, compassion and grace as I heard that evening from Amelia. I learnt a lot about the problem, and am working with Amelia and Help Refugees to arrange meetings with senior ministers and officials in the Foreign Office and DFID to see how we can improve the situation both for refugees all across Europe, and also for those who legally settle in Britain.
