Over the past few months, I have heard from local people about their concern at the continued loss of banks from our High Streets. High Street banks provide an easy and convenient way for people – particularly those who struggle with online banking – to access and manage their money. I believe that it is vital that we do something to address this troubling trend.
For some time, I have been following the pilot in Rochford, Essex closely where the local community have established a shared banking hub whereby several banks share the same facility. This hub has worked effectively in being able to provide suitable banking services to local customers. I believe that a hub like this in Hitchin and Harpenden would be hugely beneficial to local people. This week I have written to the Minister to outline my support for the development of such a hub locally and to request the Government’s support in developing this. You can see my letter below.
