Bim Afolami MP, the Member of Parliament for Hitchin & Harpenden, met with 18 local Headteachers from Primary and Secondary Schools in the Harpenden and District Headteachers’ Consortium on Tuesday (7th February) to hear from them about the local challenges they face.
Mr Afolami listened to the Headteachers’ concerns and asked them what message they would like him to give to the Education Secretary. Issues raised included school utility bills, staff pay and recruitment and support for students with special educational needs.
Bim Afolami MP said,
“Providing a top class education for local young people is so important. It was good to hear directly from local Headteachers in Harpenden and the villages about the challenges facing their schools. I know that the Government is doing what it can to provide support to schools and to help address some of the issues raised, but I will continue to work with our local schools and Ministerial colleagues to help address the points made.
“I have already put in a request to ask a question of the Education Secretary on her assessment of our county’s SEND funding and this is a particular area where I am exploring whether we can secure an improvement for Hertfordshire students.”
