Bim Afolami MP, Member of Parliament for Hitchin & Harpenden, attended a Parliamentary Reception with local businesspeople to discuss the challenges facing small businesses at the moment. The reception, hosted by accounting company Xero, was held to launch a new report looking at the challenges and opportunities for businesses across the United Kingdom.
Mr Afolami is a member of the powerful Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee – Parliamentarians’ body to scrutinise the Government’s business policy. He has previously worked on a number of policies around small business support, including the discretionary grant scheme he pioneered with the Treasury during the Covid pandemic to unlock more support for small businesses.
Bim Afolami MP said,
“Small businesses are at the heart of our local economy and our communities in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages. It was a great pleasure to speak with Anna and Chris – two Hitchin & Harpenden based small business owners – at this important event in Parliament.
We need to ensure that businesses like Anna and Chris’s have the opportunity to grow and thrive. That’s why it is so important that the Government understands and tackles the challenges facing small businesses and creates the right regulatory and fiscal environment for them to thrive. I will continue to be a firm champion for Hitchin & Harpenden’s small businesses in Parliament and will work closely with Government Ministers to ensure that they get the support they need, so that we can supercharge economic growth – in Hitchin & Harpenden and across the country.”
