Hitchin & Harpenden’s Member of Parliament met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt to raise local people’s priorities on Wednesday (8th February). Topics raised included the cost of living, financing for renewable and sustainable energy projects, and the future of in-person banking services in Harpenden.
Bim Afolami MP said,
“You have told me about your priorities and I continue to do everything I can to make our communities heard in Westminster. I had a very productive meeting with the Chancellor to discuss a whole range of issues – including the Government’s action to combat the cost of living, where households across our area can expect to continue to receive support throughout this year.
“We also discussed the financing of renewable and sustainable energy projects – including nuclear. Renewable and sustainable energy is the answer to delivering better energy security through reliable, homegrown and clean energy and also helps us to reach our net zero ambitions. I’ve seen first hand the way that innovative companies in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages are driving forwards some of the technology that will help to unlock clean power and fuels and I will continue to work with the Chancellor to ensure that they have the support they need.
“The Treasury’s Financial Services and Markets Bill also continues to be a subject of interest locally as we look to secure the future of in-person banking services in Harpenden. The Chancellor and I had a productive discussion about the provisions in that Bill relating to access to cash and in-person banking and I am confident that we will be able to secure the support we need to deliver on our Banking Hub plans.
“I will continue to work hard with the Chancellor to deliver for residents in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages.”
