Hitchin & Harpenden’s Member of Parliament, Bim Afolami MP, has hailed the decision to cancel plans to scrap the Day Travelcard as “fantastic news” for local residents.
The Member of Parliament wrote to the Mayor of London, Labour’s Sadiq Khan, in May to call for him to reverse his decision to scrap the Travelcard. Day Travelcards allow commuters from outside of London to pay for all of their travel in one easy and convenient ticket. Conservative estimates quoted by Mr Afolami at the time suggested Mayor Khan’s plan to scrap the Travelcard could cost commuters in his Hitchin & Harpenden constituency an extra £180 per month.
Now, following an intervention from the Government, the Day Travelcard is set to be retained.
Reacting to the news, Bim Afolami MP said,
“Hundreds of people backed our campaign to protect the Day Travelcard – and they have told me about the impact that withdrawing the Travelcard would have had on people in Hitchin, Harpenden and the villages. I was delighted to learn that plans by the Mayor of London to withdraw the Day Travelcard have been cancelled and this Travelcard will now be retained. The Government’s intervention to secure this will be so important to our communities – all of our campaigning has paid off!”
