I met with the Minister of State to discuss the Government’s newly published Energy Security Strategy. This strategy will help us to develop an affordable, clean and secure supply of energy which will protect consumers and build towards our target for a clean power system. The Government wants to see 95% of British electricity as low carbon from 2030, with a fully decarbonised energy system from 2035.
These plans include up to eight nuclear reactors; up to 50GW from offshore wind by 2030, including plans for floating offshore wind in deeper seas; a Heat Pump Investment Accelerator Competition in 2022 worth up to £30m to make British heat pumps; up to 10GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, with at least half coming from green hydrogen; and plans to consult with communities to deliver new onshore renewables projects.
As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Renewable and Sustainable Energy, I will continue to work closely with Ministerial colleagues on this.
